The Aidia Proposal

AlanJDore.com Now, the writing on this site offers a taste of a personal voice. For a formal tone, read a proposal I wrote (and designed) to create a local organization that would combat a global problem: the millions who die each year without access to clean water.

Marketing Plan

Here's a sample of business writing given to me to edit for readability. This particular selection is the opening section of a firm’s first major marketing plan, and details have been changed to protect the client’s identity. Please note that the following is NOT my writing.

What this Plan is. . .

This document is the first published Strategic Marketing Plan for GreatThing. This publication is timed to coincide with the soon-to-be released launch of greatthing.net. The Plan follows a one-year process with contributions from the marketing team as well as the sales team, and seeks formal adoption by the Vice President in the 1st quarter of 2012.

The Plan looks at the current market for similar products, at the major players in the field, and seeks to identify trends that will influence the market over the next five years. It looks at GreatThing’s place within the market now, and where it should aim to be by 2018. The analysis looks at the strengths and weaknesses of the greatthing.net site, and how these should help influence opportunities and threats in the marketplace. It also looks in detail at the features of GreatThing and the benefits this delivers to customers. From this analysis, the Plan identifies a number of target markets whose needs are most closely matched by the benefits provided by greatthing.net.

Finally, the Plan sets targets for penetration by GreatThing into these target markets, and lists the main strategies which the Marketing Project proposes to achieve these goals.

AFTER
After my hand at editing, here is the result.

The Plan

As the first strategic marketing plan for GreatThing™, this document examines our latest product and explores our first year advertising for it. We timed this plan’s release to coincide with the launch of GreatThing.net, and we seek its formal adoption in 2012’s first quarter.

In the pages that follow, we look at the current market for similar products, the major players in the field, and the key trends expected to affect the marketplace over the next five years. We also examine GreatThing’s prospective market niche in today’s market, and the niche we should aim to claim by 2018. To achieve that, we then observe GreatThing’s strengths and weaknesses and predict how both could affect its opportunities and threats.

Later, we examine our product’s features and benefits, and identify a number of target markets whose needs best match them. We then describe goals for penetrating these markets and prescribe strategies to fulfill them.

RESULT:
Cut 49 words (25 percent!), increased the text’s readability, and introduced bolding to highlight the key sections of the report.

The tone I used here was what the client wanted because it fit how they spoke with one another in their offices. The feel and level of formality of the text is up to you. All this can be discussed in a consultation.

Heartbeat Magazine

AlanJDore.comThe client here, Michigan HOSA, is the state division of a national organization for healthcare students. Every year, the organization sent out a spiral bound document. But last year, the director wanted to try something different. He gave me his favorite magazine, Time, and asked me if I could model the material after it. I did so, often with down-to-the-millimeter precision.
